The AV and IT System on-board

Updated: Aug 19, 2019

Making the right steps when upgrading your on-board critical systems

Getting it right first time deeply depends on planning and making the correct decisions.

Design

"When choosing such systems, it is essential that thoroughly researched and dependable technology is selected but that is daunting and overly complicated for those who don’t know what to look for"

Much criticism is aimed at the AV/IT systems for its exclusiveness, scalability, and reliability, as most clients have an issue with the trustworthiness of their AV systems. Many AV companies try to reinvent the wheel by creating "their" own system and components. This does have its pros and cons on one side doesn’t give you further options should they not offer what you need. From the other side the available components are tried and tested and work well within their ecosystem. For instance, you won't be able to integrate Crestron, Savant, or Control 4 systems together. You need to decide which system is best for your yacht. However, depending on the system, it does give you one port of call for designing implementation and recovery. When choosing such systems, it is essential that thoroughly researched and dependable technology is selected but that is daunting and overly complicated for those who don’t know what to look for. We put our name on the line by recommending tried and tested options to our clients. When making that critical decision on which avenue you will go down, you must take into account, the chosen integrator's aftercare services.

Homework

We must do our homework before we dive into a system, some salesmen will promise you the world. Sometimes if it sounds too good, then it probably is, like most things in life. We are always researching and keeping up to date with AV/IT training. It is essential to stay current with all of the new products being released to know how they tick. In the AV/IT world, you snooze you literally, lose. You need to choose systems that durable over extensive periods of time and some companies are dedicated to not only their existing products but the development of new products for their customers. If, you're lucky enough to get this right the first time your AV system will be fully updates and have a fresh new look by simply pushing as firmware upgrade. However, should a bespoke system be chosen then you will be stuck with that purchase until the integrator is asked to freshen your system.

There are two things to learn from the above: 1) Choose the right integrator who comes recommended or one with reputable reviews. 2) Choose the right system for your yacht. There is a difference between overkill and future proofing.

One of our roles is to critique AV/IT systems on-board and provide our opinion on installations. We have created our 12 main points where we believe you should take extra care, be prepared and getting it right:
