THE AV KISS

Updated: Aug 19, 2019

Keep It Simple Stupid- like everything in life simplicity is the best. This also applies to our world.

Welcome to your blog post. Use this space to connect with your readers and potential customers in a way that’s current and interesting. Think of it as an ongoing conversation where you can share updates about business, trends, news, and more.

Design with Ease

Do you have a design in mind for your blog? Whether you prefer a trendy postcard look or you’re going for a more editorial style blog - there’s a stunning layout for everyone.

Keep it simple stupid (KISS). I have witnessed a complete new AV system where the design was so overcomplicated and to get it signed off was such a headache. From the source to the TV, a 4K video signal routed over an AV network upscaled and downscaled six times through six separate components.Using too many devices means multiple items going wrong and numerous areas to chase down faults. This also means you have to keep a plethora of spare parts for numerous systems. Ironically that system kept malfunctioning throughout the yacht and had plenty of different issues during the commissioning stages. That job had over 130 defects on the snagging list. If the system is going to be over complicated then who will fix it when the guests want to watch their favourite TV shows, of course, the ETO / Engineer to the rescue, however, the ETO’s and Engineers have plenty to do without babysitting a brand new AV installation and why should he/she. The AV system should be reliable and trustworthy to bring confidence to the ship's crew.

The integrator needs to take responsibility and except changes if they need to. They agreed to take on the job, and they designed a system for your yacht. At the design stages If the integrator doesn’t recommend a suggestion then it’s for a valid reason. This also validates them as a company rather than saying yes and just finding a way around the issue, which won’t be what the client asked for 9/10 times. Our focus is getting it right the first time in a way that is clear and understandable to the client. Acknowledgement of failure in this industry spreads fast as information is constantly being shared throughout the yachting community of engineers. Therefore, we have to question a designers objective, surely it should be to enable the user to communicate with the AV system logically and for there commands to be executed through the AV control system. If a yacht owner is struggling to navigate his/her way around your GUI then it should not have been sold and clients will naturally want an easier system. Simplicity, in my opinion, is the key to making AV/IT systems as accessible as humanly possible; a child should be able to navigate around it with ease.
